What is Hetian Jade? A Complete Guide to China's Most Treasured Gemstone

Hetian jade — also known as Nephrite jade — is one of the most revered gemstones in human history. For over 5,000 years, it has been prized in Chinese culture as a symbol of purity, grace, and good fortune.

What Makes Hetian Jade Special?

Unlike the more commonly known jadeite (found primarily in Myanmar), Hetian jade is a form of nephrite — a calcium magnesium silicate mineral known for its exceptional toughness, smooth texture, and warm, waxy lustre.

The name "Hetian" comes from the Hetian region in Xinjiang, China, historically the most famous source. However, today fine nephrite jade is also found in other regions, including Nanyang in Henan Province — where our workshop is based.

Varieties of Hetian Jade

Hetian jade comes in a remarkable range of colours, each with its own character:

  • White Jade (Baiyu) — The most prized variety. Pure white with a subtle translucency, often compared to mutton fat.
  • Green Jade (Biyu/Celadon) — Ranges from pale celadon to deep forest green. Our most popular colour for bracelets.
  • Blue Jade (Qiemo Blue) — A rare blue-grey variety from the Qiemo region.
  • Caramel Jade (Tangyu) — Warm honey to deep amber tones, caused by iron oxidation.
  • Golden Jade (Huangkou) — A sought-after golden-yellow variety.
  • Aqua Jade — A soft blue-green, reminiscent of still water.

How to Tell if Jade is Real

With so much imitation jade on the market, knowing how to identify genuine nephrite is important:

  • Temperature test: Real jade feels cool to the touch and warms slowly in your hand.
  • Sound test: When two pieces of real jade are tapped together, they produce a clear, resonant sound.
  • Transparency: Hold it to the light — genuine nephrite has a subtle, even translucency.
  • Texture: Real jade has a smooth, slightly waxy feel that is difficult to replicate.
  • Certification: Reputable sellers provide authenticity documentation. At Onlan, every jade piece comes with an authenticity card.

The Cultural Significance of Jade

In Chinese culture, jade represents the five virtues: benevolence, righteousness, wisdom, courage, and integrity. It has been used for imperial seals, ritual objects, and personal adornment for millennia.

Today, jade is worn worldwide — not just for its beauty, but for its cultural meaning. Many believe jade brings good luck, protection, and positive energy to the wearer.

How to Care for Your Jade

Nephrite jade is remarkably durable (6.0-6.5 on the Mohs scale), but proper care ensures it maintains its lustre:

  • Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, perfume, and chlorine
  • Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching
  • Wearing jade regularly actually improves its lustre over time — the natural oils from your skin enhance its appearance
