How to Care for Your Gemstone Jewellery: A Simple Guide
Natural gemstone jewellery is designed to last a lifetime — but a little care goes a long way. Here's how to keep your Onlan pieces looking their best.
General Care Tips
- Put jewellery on last — after applying perfume, lotion, makeup, and sunscreen
- Remove before water activities — swimming, bathing, washing dishes
- Remove before exercise — sweat and impact can damage elastic and gemstones
- Store separately — in the pouch provided, away from harder jewellery that could scratch
Caring for Jade
Jade is one of the toughest gemstones — tougher than steel. But it still deserves care:
- Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning
- Wearing jade regularly actually improves its appearance — your skin's natural oils enhance its lustre
- Jade can handle brief water contact, but prolonged exposure may weaken elastic cords
Caring for Crystal Bracelets
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth
- Avoid prolonged sunlight — some crystals (like amethyst) can fade with UV exposure
- Keep away from extreme temperatures
Caring for Sterling Silver
- Silver naturally tarnishes over time — this is normal
- Clean with a silver polishing cloth
- Remove before swimming (chlorine accelerates tarnishing)
- Store in an airtight bag when not wearing
When to Replace Your Bracelet
Elastic stretch bracelets will eventually need restringing — typically after 1-2 years of daily wear. If your bracelet feels loose, contact us at hello@onlan.co and we'll advise on restringing options.
